Craig Richards to Head-up Operations & Engineering

Craig Richards

Craig Richards, previously Director Asia Pacific, is to take on a new role at SLA Mobile – driving forward the company’s global engineering and operations function.  With the appointment of Jonathan Ng as Director responsible for APAC, Craig will become Director of Operations & Engineering.  He will continue to be based in Kuala Lumpur – the centre of excellence for SLA Mobile’s operations and engineering delivery team.

Commenting on Craig’s new role, Nic Stirk, SLA Mobile’s CEO says, “Craig is a level-headed, business focussed technologist, who has consistently delivered projects to some of the world’s leading mobile operators.  While Craig will continue to work closely with Vodafone, in particular, in APAC and Middle East regions, his new role will focus more on building SLA Mobile’s platforms and products for future growth.”

According to Craig he’s looking forward to the new challenge.  “With our Alacrity enablement platform SLA Mobile is well positioned to support mobile operators building a mobile future where more and more enhanced mobile services are delivered via the cloud.  We have an exciting story to tell in that space and I’m looking forward to building compelling solutions on the back of our highly extensible Alacrity platform.”

Jonathan Ng joins SLA Mobile as Director for APAC region

Jonathan Ng

Based in Kuala Lumpur, Jonathan Ng will lead sales, business development and marketing activities for SLA Mobile in Asia Pacific.  He has some fifteen years of senior business development experience in the telecommunications industry, covering all domains from fixed to mobile to enterprise business.

Commenting on Jonathan’s appointment, Nic Stirk, CEO of SLA Mobile commented, “Jonathan is a great addition to the team especially now that we’re really developing our market presence in the APAC region on the back of Alacrity – our key enabler of mobile and social network solutions across the global mobile industry.  Jonathan’s experience across all facets of the mobile industry will help us position Alacrity as the enabler of choice in the region.”

According to Jonathan, the opportunities for SLA Mobile in the region look very positive.  “It’s clear that operators now face a significant challenge in terms of maintaining customer relationships and revenue.  Over the last two years the over-the-top players have challenged every aspect of the operators’ business model and time to market of services – and are diluting the relationship that operators have with their customers.  However, the most progressive operators are sensing that there are opportunities in the market as well – leveraging the emerging social channel, offering new, richer services and offering merchant services that take advantage of the trust that mobile customers have invested in their service providers.  I’m confident that we have a compelling story to tell operators in the region.”

Jonathan started his career in the telecommunications industry working with a mobile operator before moving across to work with several major integrators and software vendors.  His regional responsibilities have focused on VAS infrastructure, service delivery platforms, specialised telecom software/systems and FMC applications.

SLA Mobile put best foot forward in Malaysia

Kicking off at the very spot where Malaysia proclaimed independence in 1957, the Kuala Lumpur (KL) Marathon is a powerful and mesmerising showcase for modern life in South East Asia.

The gruelling 26 mile route winds through the capital’s diverse patchwork of historical landmarks, tourist-friendly thoroughfares and state-of-the-art corporate towers. It effortlessly captures the essence of a city reaching forward but remaining fully connected to its past.

Spurred on by hundreds of thousands of roaring supporters lining every inch of the sun-bleached streets of KL the 18,000 thousand runners in last month’s event battled exhaustion, stifling humidity and the distraction of a few well-known Asian celebrities as they raised more than 500,000 Malaysian Ringgits (RM) for a host of worthy causes. We, at SLA Mobile, were proud to be running with them.

Attracting the backing of a host of companies – including Liverpool Football Club’s new sponsor Standard Chartered – the marathon’s ‘Run for a Cause’ initiative was a great way for firms to get involved and raise funds for five major local charitable initiatives including the Children’s Environmental Heritage Foundation and the Malaysian Association for the Blind.

Led by our fearless internet guru, Richard Barnes Webb, SLA Mobile’s team of four amateur athletes not only raised an amazing RM40,000, approximately £8,000, for good causes but also managed to set the fastest time in the Corporate Challenge category.

The opportunity to run alongside Malaysia’s Miss World winner, Thanuja Tnanthan, may have provided just a little extra encouragement as the team paced through stifling temperatures, but of course the main reason we were taking part was to help make a difference and support the communities in which we work.

Similar to Belfast, it is generally recognised in KL that an organisation’s responsibilities should extend beyond business hours and Corporate Social Responsibility is a key part of the fabric of doing business here and something we take very seriously. Business isn’t just about making money; it’s also about giving something back to society wherever you are.

Social responsibility is in the very DNA of SLA Mobile and in fact was written into its mission statement when the company was founded in 2003.

As we’ve grown locally in Belfast and internationally in Dusseldorf, London and here in Kuala Lumpur, we’ve been proud to lend our support to helping worthy causes through special fund-raising events, donations and partnerships. Last year, for example, we took to the skies with a staff skydive in aid of Action MS in Northern Ireland.

Malaysia and KL have benefited enormously from Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the last decade particularly in the high-tech sector with the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) providing encouragement and incentives for firms to locate on its shores. But it is reassuring to see that the majority of companies that are flourishing here, including SLA Mobile, are still actively supporting the communities which produce our pool of employees.

Like many South East Asian countries, poverty is a controversial issue in Malaysia and even in KL – which has benefited from strong economic growth – about a quarter of the six million plus population is estimated to live in squatter settlements. For local charities working to pull thousands of people out of poverty, international businesses and their zany fund-raising activities are vital.

As for our involvement, in spite of a few aching legs and throbbing feet we’re proud of the team’s achievements and the generous support given across the entire organisation towards their endeavours. The date for the 2011 KL Marathon, 26th June, has already been ring-fenced in the diaries. Maybe by then our feet will have cooled off just enough for our second race. But before that, it’s time for a little well deserved summer break in Puerto Banus and a chance to watch the world go by with the family.

Our KL story, part 3

Published in the Belfast Newsletter as part of the East meets West series, part three of five.

Ask any seasoned traveller, people are largely the same wherever you go. Some things need time for adjustment and understanding like local laws and odd delicacies, equally attempts at humour are best left to the brave and the bold – at least until you’re well settled in. My motto is ‘be polite, speak slow, and smile.’

Wherever you are, the people around you are usually working, living, loving and generally wanting for the same things as folks back home.

My journeys to Malaysia are an example of great people-focused service. It all kicks off with a chat, coffee and haircut by Cathy in Donaghadee-based Kelly Cowans, Northern Ireland’s L’Oreal award-winning salon, before my wife Joanne takes me the airport.  Some twenty four hours later I walk into my accommodation in downtown Kaula Lumpur (KL) to be greeted by the concierge saying “Welcome back Mr Philip”.  Whether Donaghadee or KL it’s the little touches count.

Customer services are driving the mobile market too as consumers across the globe demand the latest technology and data services quickly and at the lowest prices. The pace of the sector is creating new opportunities for hi-tech Northern Ireland firms as global operators scramble to satisfy consumers from Strabane to Singapore or Seattle.

Local staff at SLA Mobile’s Centre of Excellence, based in the Malaysian capital of KL, are quick to remind us that until only recently Asian consumers had to look on enviously as their European cousins worked and grappled with the latest technology trends. Boy has that changed. IPhones and smartphones are now just as common on the streets of KL as they are in the leafy suburbs of Belfast.

Helped by recent price declines, smartphones are within reach of the growing middle-classes in Southeast Asia’s top six economies; Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines Indonesia and Vietnam.  That’s a market of nearly 500 million people.

Manufacturers are rising to the challenge and shipments of smartphones this year are forecast to rise to 9.7 million units in Southeast Asia, more than three times the forecast level of growth for mobile phones in the region.

The boon in availability is good news for consumers, operators and manufacturers, but it is also providing a wealth of opportunities for mobile data and service providers in a position to reach the growing markets.

In Indonesia, for example, we recently unveiled a new mobile advertising service for mobile operators. Designed by our team in KL, it is now in use in Indonesia enabling our customer to offer its 25 million mobile customers cheaper internet access in return for receiving targeted adverts.

With almost all countries in Southeast Asia boasting 3G, services and delivery here are largely similar to that in Europe and is often back by familiar global brands such as Vodafone. Indigenous  providers, although not widely know in Northern Ireland, also command a lion’s share of the market with firms like Indonesia-based Indo XL and SingTel, representing two of Southeast Asia’s largest telecoms operators.

Mirroring established consumer markets in Europe and USA, each anticipated launch, handset unveiling or new service offering is watched and gossiped on intensely by trade and consumers alike. For example, excitement is already building here for the forthcoming Communicasia expo in June and the 2010 Mobile Asia Congress (MAC) which takes place in November.

For firms like SLA Mobile, it represents an opportunity to get to understand more about our markets, establish new contacts and reconnect with old ones. Importantly it gives us a chance to review the technology and opportunities that are coming down the line.

Drawing a lot of early excitement is the Mac’s first-ever App Planet event which features app developer conferences with top mobile providers, app exhibitions and networking. But whether you’re a fan or not, there’s no denying that the Apple iPhone and its ‘apps store’ reins supreme here just as it does at home.

With stylish good looks and game-changing functionality, the iPhone is the most talked about and most wanted handset in Malaysia. Mind you there are lots of cheap knock-off imitations flooding the market too. Most of the fakes lack basic functionality, in fact some cannot even make calls, but the eerie aesthetic similarities make them notoriously difficult to tell apart from the original and fool thousands of bargain-hunters.

With consumers constantly wanting to increase their street credibility, access to the latest technology and save some cash there will probably always be a demand for cheap imitations and not just in KL. In Northern Ireland you’ve probably seen one or two suspicious vendors at the open air markets or designer goods with prices that really are too good to be true.

It just underlines what we already know; people and demands for bargains really are the same wherever you go.

GSMA Announces New Payments Consultation

The European Payments Council (EPC), the decision-making and coordination body of the European banking industry in relation to payments, and GSMA, representing the interests of the worldwide mobile communications industry, have released the paper “TSM Service Management Requirements and Specifications” in the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) for public consultation. This document describes the different roles and processes involved in the provision and lifecycle management of banks’ mobile contactless payment (MCP) applications integrated into a mobile phone.

The consultation open to all interested market participants marks an important breakthrough in cross-industry cooperation between payment services providers and mobile network operators aimed at empowering over 500 million European consumers to make SEPA payments using their mobile phone. This cooperation is the most ambitious project designed to date to build a common architecture for mobile contactless payments.

Dag-Inge Flatraaker, Chair of the EPC M-Channel Group, comments: “The requirements developed by EPC and GSMA will have a major impact enabling the mobile as a channel for payments in SEPA. This initiative paves the way for more efficient commercial launches of mobile contactless payments and contributes to interoperability and freedom of choice for the different stakeholders.”

“This is a significant move as it is the first time that mobile operators and banks have worked together at the international level on a common vision for contactless payments,” says Alex Sinclair, Chief Technology Officer and Chief Strategy Officer, GSMA.

In June 2008, the EPC and GSMA joined forces to support the further development of mobile payment services leveraging both the existing SEPA infrastructure and the infrastructure set up by mobile network operators. The EPC and GSMA are focused on defining requirements and specifications regarding the roles of Trusted Service Managers to interface with banks and mobile operators. TSMs will facilitate the distribution, configuration and activation of the bank’s payment application on the Universal Integrated Circuit Card (UICC, also known as a SIM card) within bank customers’ Near Field Communications* (NFC) handsets (their mobile phone). This technology allows, for example, payment using a mobile phone at a card payment terminal provided by a retailer or when purchasing from a vending machine.

The definition and specification of the requirements and business models for TSM services closes an existing gap in the new NFC ecosystem. The consultation now launched by the EPC and GSMA will eventually lead to shared solutions supporting the establishment of commercial relationships between banks, mobile network operators and Trusted Service Managers thus promoting mobile contactless payments across SEPA. In addition, the agreement on TSM specifications allows interested parties to develop services in the role of a TSM.

Advertising2SLA Mobile has unveiled details of an innovative mobile advertising solution specifically-designed to help mobile operators maximise their advertising revenue potential.  One of the first interactive ‘interstitial’ advertising solutions for mobile or 3G data card users, the SLA Mobile advertising campaign manager product integrates with wireless carriers’ existing capability to track users’ browsing behaviour and provides a dedicated server to coordinate targeted advertising delivery and report on specific campaign penetration.

Based on a user opt-in model, the closed-loop interstitial advertising solution analyses individual users’ browsing habits to define unique interests and load specific advertising tailored to their preferences between webpage loads.

The SLA Mobile product is being deployed under licence by policy and charging  company Volubill to enable an Indonesia-based operator offer its 25 million strong subscription base mobile internet services at a reduced rate.

Nic Stirk, SLA Mobile Chief Executive and co-founder of the Mobile Advertising Alliance, which represents leading mobile software vendors, said the application would bring greater revenue to operators:

“The mobile sector continues to command an ever-growing share of the global advertising spend. New opportunities to grow relationships between brands and consumers offer more exciting ways for advertisers to talk directly to their markets with huge benefits for operators, advertisers and consumers alike.

“Through our pioneering advertising solution, operators can offer advertisers added value and claim a larger slice of advertising revenues.”

John Aalbers, CEO at Volubill said the link up with SLA Mobile would help operators to provide new tariff options for end users and increase their ability to cash in on greater advertising opportunities:

“We are committed to providing our customers with the best technology solutions available and SLA Mobile’s technology allows us to offer new opportunities and help claim a larger share of advertising revenue. Integrating with our data policy control and charging software, the advertising campaign manager analyses user trends and delivers targeted adverts that do not detract from the mobile user’s experience.  Additionally it enables us to track and evaluate how successful each campaign has been.”

Founded in 2003, SLA Mobile provide high-tech platforms and services that enable mobile phone operators, including Fox Mobile Distribution and Vodafone, to reduce the time and cost of taking rich media content and advertising to market.

Earlier this year SLA Mobile followed Google and eBay on to a list of the world’s top ICT companies clinching a coveted ‘Red Herring’ award in Berlin, Germany. Named after the media company, Red Herring, the annual awards are seen as an indicator of companies with the know-how to help transform our daily lives.

SLA Mobile has become the first Northern Ireland company to confirm a place in the UK’s Top 10 fastest-growing technology list, it was announced today.

The firm, which designs and integrates specialist solutions for the global mobile industry, joins the prestigious UK Deloitte Fast 50 high-tech leader board after growing by more than 4,000 per cent in just five years, boosted by a string of international deals with some of the world’s biggest mobile brands and rapid overseas expansion.

Founded in 2003, SLA Mobile has established itself as a technology market leader for the mobile industry developing strategic partnerships with global software giants such as TIBCO, which enable wireless operators to grow profit from rich media content and advertising. It employs more than 80 staff in Belfast, London, Dusseldorf and Kuala Lumpur.

SLA Mobile Chief Executive, Nic Stirk, said the title was a reflection of the company’s innovation-led strategy:

“This is a great achievement for us and a reward for our dedication to creatively challenge in new sectors and markets with fresh ideas.   In less than a decade, our commitment to innovation has seen us grow from an ambitious start-up to a market leader exporting cutting-edge solutions across the globe.

“In the last five years we’ve added some of the world’s biggest operators to our client base. The mobile market is evolving fast and we are working hard to ensure that we grow even further at home and overseas by competing in lucrative new markets such as mobile advertising and developing effective partnerships with global reach and clear benefits for our customers,” he added.

The firm, which was also crowned Northern Ireland’s fastest-growing high-tech company, recently unveiled a ‘world-first’ advertising solution for mobile and 3G data card users which is designed to help wireless operators increase advertising revenue.

The cutting-edge ‘interstitial’ advertising manager analyses individual browser behaviour to present tailored advertising between mobile internet pageloads. It is set to go live to a 25 million-strong subscription base in Indonesia through a tie-up with policy and charging company Volubill.

Now in its twelfth year, the Deloitte Fast 50 ranks the fastest-growing technology companies in the UK based on percentage revenue growth over five years.

SLA Mobile was also listed as one of top 100 European tech firms to watch at the prestigious Red Herring Awards earlier in the year.
